Open Source Is Anti-American

from the this-sounds-familiar dept

I saw these comments earlier today and ignored them, but now everyone is talking about Microsoft VP James Allchin's claims that open source is against the American Way, which is about the stupidest thing anyone has ever heard. The fact that someone is actually competing with Microsoft is against the American Way? Hell, his comments sound like a troll. And, of course, this is nothing new. It wasn't that long ago that Gates was declaring the fact that Netscape gave away their browser as being the equivalent of communism.

You use the word communism as though it were a bad thing! Communism is a fantastic system, the problem is that nobody in the world has actually ever implemented it yet (Apart that is from a few people last century in the USA)

Um. I didn't really use the word communism. Gates did. And he was definitely using it as though it were negative. I certainly didn't have any positive or negative implications in the use of it. I don't discuss political philosophy on Techdirt.

The referenced article was great. Short, sweet, to the point.

Being American is about the following things
    1. Profit above all else
    2. Monopolisation
    3. Exploitation
    4. Ignorance

Communism is a great philosophy, it's a pity that hardly anyone understands it.
