Hidden Damages To Copy Protection

from the consumer-don't-like-it dept

A good article looking at the hidden damages to copy protection schemes. Basically, his complaint is that it limits the legal uses of content, and thus will piss off regular consumers. This in turn, could lower sales dramatically (he provides some examples). Yes, piracy is a problem, but in many cases piracy actually acts as "viral marketing" for a legitimate copy of the product. So, the end results it that a content providing company is likely to do a lot more business without copy protection than with it.
