iVillage And Women.com Merge

from the it-takes-a-village dept

The two top "womens" sites online, both of whom are struggling, are now merging with each other. iVillage and Women.com will merge as they try to stay in business, and find a business model that actually makes them some money. It definitely takes some pressure off of each company since they no longer have to compete with each other for ad revenue. However, I still get the feeling this is a desperation play by two companies that might be close to going out of business. The details of the transaction are a bit interesting as well. Hearst Communications, who owns much of Women.com has agreed to buy $15 to $21 million in advertising on iVillage. So, basically, Hearst is paying iVillage to take Women.com off its hands.
