Good question
I was wondering the same thing. For some reason, every major news source picked up that story today despite it being out for some time now. This response in the Guardian suggests that The Register was fooled into thinking it was a hoax when it really wasn't. There story was also covered in ZD and on two seperate articles on the BBC site among other places.
