Using Avatars In Meetings

from the talk-about-telecommuting dept

The old joke about people who videoconference in to meetings from home is that they can just put on a nice shirt with their sweatpants. Of course, now you may be able to not get dressed at all, as some people are trying to create systems for online meetings where you are represented by an avatar of yourself. Of course, things like this have been around for a long time and never really caught on. I remember using OnLive Traveler more than three years ago for the same purpose (though my avatar was a floating fish). Of course, as mhh5 pointed out to me, it seems that avatar quality may be improving. I still don't know if I'd trust an avatar to conduct my business for me, though I guess it might be easier to program in "keep a poker face" than to actually perfect my own (admittedly weak) poker face.

When you could just "create" identities and avatars to go with them? I'm really amazed at the quality of avatars now. But to really get avatars going, we need to start an avatar porn biz.... I wonder if there are any "avatars" on amIhotornot.com?

Actually, some folks I know put up a face on amihotornot that was created from some sort of weird study about whether or not there was a perfectly beautiful face. Or something like that. I didn't follow the details... but, it looks like she's only scoring around a 7.

well.. considering that the scoring seems to correlate more with the suggestive nakedness of the person, a 7 isn't bad for just the face..

Definitely a good point. Of course, I don't find the picture that attractive, but maybe I'm just odd in that I don't go for women with weird dithering...
