The Offspring To Giveaway Music On The Web

from the more-cool-musicians dept

The Offspring has decided to put its latest album up on the web for fans to download. Sony asked them not to do it, but they didn't listen. There's a great quote in there: "This album is going to end up on the Internet anyway, whether we like it to or not. We want to beat them (Napster) to the punch and find out who our fans are." Hopefully this will help convince the music industry how stupid they've been. Update: Looking at the actual announcement from the band makes the story even better. Apparently the actual CD will have a "key" that let's their fans access special areas of the Offspring's website. So they reward true fans who go out and buy the album as well. I hope they sell a ridiculous number of albums...

I also like their "lottery" promotion. I think the chance to win something or other will encourage micropayments for downloads. Now I wonder what UNKNOWN band will try this first? It would seem to be a great promotional idea. Look at how well iWon.com is doing....?
