Home Automation Via Your Mobile Phone

from the that's-one-useful-little-device dept

Everyone's been trying to work out what the holy grail for home automation is for years, and nothing really seems to catch on. Over in Japan, they're now going to test out a system of using your mobile phone for home automation. However, beyond just controlling your lights and appliances via your mobile phone, they're really trying to add in additional useful features that recognize the fact that you can access "your home" from anywhere. So, they'll let you set up your PVR system to record a show and then broadcast it to your mobile phone. They'll also let you view security cameras in your home if a motion sensor trips the alarm. Who knows if people will actually find these useful, but it is another sign of convergence, where certain technologies that have been tried and failed before receive new interest by combining it with some other technology. Meanwhile, in somewhat related news, it turns out that Opera is trying to offer a similar application for controlling your own TiVo/PVR via your mobile phone.

  • Home Automation thru web services

    by Arun Jacob

Back in 2001, i had won a competition demonstrating the same technology. Microsoft was just bringing out .NET, and had organized a worldwide student competition to demonstrate innovative uses of web services (i.e. cases where web services are best suited to be used, and not used just because it is a new technology)

What we did was expose the home appliances through a web service. Other web services would provide this "home web service" with necessary services like security etc. The best thing was that due to this architecture, you could automate the home using any UI that could invoke the web service.

We demoed an SMS interface, a web browser interface and a smart client interface (running on an iPAQ)

      hi,
I have developed a similar system for home automation. I can control my home electrical systems anywhere in the world by means of cell phone sms. I had developed a language called EMP(Enhanced mail Program). By this u can type ur program in ur phone & sms it to ur mail. In house the computer will automatically check for the mail every 5 or 10 seconds. if it happens to be the mail containing that program then my vb program will compile the prog & run it. I had interfaced my home lighting systems through parallel port. Please help me with this in developing it to a greater extent. I need to develop it in a wireless manner.

Snapstream PVR program (http://www.snapstream.com/products/products_pvs3.asp) already allow you to program/schedule your PVR by cellphone. I haven't tested it out so I'm not too sure how well it works.

  • London Plumber

You must be looking for a London Plumber or you wouldn't be here but who will do the best job for a fair price? You want a London plumber that won’t leave a big mess when the job is done and you want your problem fixed right the first time. Furthermore you want that company to still be here for at least the life of your warranty.
