RIAA IMs: We're Watching You

from the scare-tactics dept

The record labels and the RIAA are taking one more step towards pissing off their customers. Starting today they've been sending millions of instant messaging messages via file sharing services telling users that they're being watched, and that the RIAA knows they're sharing files illegally. The RIAA calls it an "educational effort", though it seems more like "threatening your customers" to me.

That's what I say. Just because I am sharing the files on my machine and someone downloads the file to his/her workstation doesn't mean that the user that got the file doesn't have the media. Right?

    So F em... nah.

If the RIAA sent the messages from Virginia, could that commonwealth seize their assets (which doesn't include the song libraries, but should net a few computers...)??
